We had a big week!
Students participated in our culminating class economics project. Each classroom chose a product to sell for the other rooms. Our class made Fuzzy Stinger Bee Toppers for $25. Other classrooms sold lemonade ($7), honey mix ($10), Bee pretzels ($15) and popcorn ($15). I went to the story and purchased supplies for $35. This was equal to $175 classroom dollars. Students who wished to become a shareholder and own a piece of the company paid $7, in the hopes they would receive a profit. If a student could not afford to become a shareholder, they would be paid an employee salary of $8 an hour. Students began work on the pencil toppers. Quality control, (me), looked at all of the products and returned any that did not meet expectations. We discussed faulty or broken items that we all have purchased through the years. Since we didn't want any returns on our product, we remade the faulty products and they were able to pass inspection. (Students learned any products that were not sold took a chunk out of our profits.) Next, we advertised our product and went into the other classrooms to market them. Last Thursday, we set up times where each classroom could enter the others and pay for their goods. When it was our turn, we realized we were not getting as many consumers that we estimated. We had more supply than demand. I asked the class what we should do and they decided we should have a sale. Maybe we would be able to move more goods this way. We went into each room and told the classes we were having a sale: $15 for a bee topper. More students ended up buying our product and the sale worked. In total we sold $1275. We subtracted our employee rate and divided by 23 shareholders for a total of $55. Shareholders took back their $7 supply cost and made a profit of $47.
